Sea Rose Shaker

This afternoon I'm posting with the Classic Design Challenge as we open the June blog challenge.  Our sponsor for this month is Ching Chou Kuik Digital Stamps. We are grateful for their support.

For my project card, I've selected Sea Rose and made a shaker card.

For this design, I started by sizing the mermaid to about 4" tall.  After printing, I used my Copic markers for coloring her and the background.

Since she has a lot of thin line details I didn't want to attempt to cut her out and attach her to the side of a shaker.  Instead I took a dome shaped die, lined it up where I wanted the shaker window and traced it lightly.  Taking my time, I then cut around the line and trimmed away around the parts of the image inside the window.   I used a dark blue Copic and covered the exposed white edges of paper after completing my cutting.

I added a piece of acetate to the back of the window, slightly larger than the opening. Still on the back -  I added double sided tape around the edge of the window and around the outside edge of the card front piece.  Then I set this aside to prepare the card base.

Next on the card base, I colored in the water where the window would line up to be, extending the water a little bit all the way around to be sure it was all covered.  Very carefully I added about a teaspoon of blue sea shaker confetti* on top of the water on the card base.

After removing the covering for the double sided tape, I carefully lined up the front to the card base and applied pressure where the tape was located.  Sounds like a lot of steps but actually was easy and went fast.   I love the way she turned out, especially the shaker part. Be sure to check out Scrapsalot, LLC to find the shaker confetti.  So many amazing colors to select from - you'll want them all.

Meet Me Under the Sea

Today I'm sharing Sweet November Stamps, March Merlot as part of their 31 days of Mermay Coloring.

I colored her earlier in the month but I'm just finding a slot here on the last day of the month to share her with you.

Here are a couple of my progressive photos for this one.  I used the colored image listed on the website as my example and also Amy Young's blog when this image was released.

All the coloring was done with my Copic markers. I started with her hair and skin.  Then the rainbow tail followed by the treasure chest and the sandy ocean bottom.

Attempting the background was about nerve-racking!  Finally I stopped and thought - I'm learning as I'm doing this.  It's not being judged or compared to the professional image.  You know - sometimes we have to talk ourselves off the wall, right.

I used a 5 1/2" square card base, covered with the shell patterned paper.  After trimming the edges of the completed image, I cut a solid yellow mat the same size.  When I secured them to the card base, I angled them so more of the yellow would show.

The sentiment was computer generated and die cut using Carnation Crafts, Pretty Shabby Square dies.

After I completed the card assembly, I added two coats of Wink of Stella Clear to her tail fin which really made it sparkle.

Images like this take hours to complete but they are challenging and fun.  I always learn something or see a way I could have made it different or better. Never be afraid to make it your own though and don't be so hard on yourself!

You Are the Pearl

Winding down the month of Sweet November Stamps 31 days of Mermay with only one more posting of them after todays.   What a fun month it has been for me!

Today's image is Merbabies Pebbles, Gumbo, Jumbo and Little Fry.  You will notice I only used the Pebbles image for this card.

After sizing and printing, I used my Copic markers for the coloring.  Here's a few progressive photos.

I generated the sentiment on the computer and then used a heart shaped die.  The card base is a standard A2 size with a bright yellow liner mat added before securing the completed image and sentiment.

Our Flag

Happy Memorial Day 2023!

In honor of this day, one of the weekend challenges was to make a patriotic card using stars and stripes in honor of the fallen.

For my entry I selected Amy's Design, America Frame Die

The die is large, measuring 5 1/2" square. This is the first time I've used it so I did add a square of wax paper between the cardstock and the die.  It cut beautifully without any issues.

I used a 6" card base and added the blue sky like paper for the background.  Then secured the die cut frame down, being sure to get all the tiny edges glued down.

I found the sentiment on Pinterest and thought it went well with the frame and for this holiday.  After sizing it to just under 2" square, I die cut it and the red matting using Tattered Lace, Lacy Days Square dies.  I secured both layers in the center of the card.

Lastly I added the blue starred ribbon at the fold and secured with a simple knot.

What a blessing it is that many who have served come home to us and their families.  I am so grateful to all who have served and protected our freedom.

Welcome to the Mermaid Lagoon

Today I'm sharing another Sweet November mermaid as part of the 31 day coloring challenge (#mermay2023).

This is Treasure Tempestwind and Eddy.

After sizing and printing, I started my coloring with her hair in shades of purple. (BV08, BV17, BV13, BV02, BV00)

Next I used shades of red for her bra and fin. (R39, R29, R27) The black multi-liner was used for the spots.

Then a little gold for the hair adornment and belt pearls.... (YR23, Y28, Y15)

And blue grey's for Eddy. (BV29, BV25, BV23, BV20, R20)

For the cave background, I looked at how others had drawn or used the background image available for purchase.  I added my hand drawn cave and used most of the same colors for the rock formation.  I added BG75 and BG72 to the center to give it depth.

I used a 5 1/2" x 6" card base and covered it with a muted green patterned paper. I die cut the image using Carnation Crafts, Shabby Squares, then mounted it in the center.  I added the sentiment at the bottom right and finished my design with the gold twine and mermaid scale charm.

I'm really pleased with how this one turned out.

Mermaids Have More Fun

Today's cute little mermaid from Sweet November Stamps is November Merlot

Here's the completed card of her having the time of her life... then a couple of the progressive photos.

With her long wavy hair I decided to make her skin tones darker than normal.

I wanted her to 'have fun' so I attempted to draw in a whale spouting water.

Then I completed the coloring by adding the water and bright orange sky.

After securing on the purple bubble paper, I added the peachy spider webbing twine and the whale's tail charm.  Lastly I added the vertical sentiment to complete the design.

The Older I Get...

Today I'm sharing the card I recently made for my brother's birthday.  I always attempt to find a funny image and/or quote for his special cards.

I ran across this 'sexy old fella' in my box of printed digis and thought he would work well.

Before I had a chance to color him, I was watching Amy Young's Saturday morning release on a rocky beach background.  I grabbed this image and started coloring with her.  What fun!!!

Afterwards, I colored in the 'birthday guy' and added the computer generated vertical sentiment.  For the finishing touch I added the 'gin' bottle charm using navy blue twine.

Inside the card I added:

Swim with Mermaids

As I mentioned in yesterday's blog, I am excited to find Amy Young's coloring videos.  This past weekend Sweet November released eleven new clear stamp mermaids, which mean Amy would be coloring several of them.

When I pulled up the video Saturday, Amy was making a rocky beach scene with the mermaid on the shore.  Since I didn't have any mermaids similar to that, I followed her background on another card you'll see, and her mermaid color combos here on Sparkle Moondrifter.

The mermaid's long flowing hair is done with Copics V000, V01, RV52, RV63.  Copic V15 was added last to add the contrast.  The shell hair ornament was done using E42, E93, and Y15.  For her eyes, Copics B06 and B02 were used.

For her bra and tail, the Copics are G000, G00, G02, BG93, and the dots are done with BG75. I also used G00 to go around the outside of the image to soften it when I cut it out.

The card base is a standard A2 size.  I secured the green wave patterned cardstock then added the pink floral.   After fussy cutting the mermaid, I secured her to the center. For this one I glued her head and body down but added a foam square to the tail to raise is for a little contrast.    Lastly I added the vertical sentiment and three tiny diamond dots which completed the card design.

A Love Like No Other

As you can tell, I'm enjoying the Sweet November 31 Days of coloring mermaids!  Thanks to one of her followers, I was able to locate and start following Amy Young's coloring videos too. What a treat to watch and follow her amazing coloring.

Today I'm sharing Sweet November's 'A Love Like No Other' ~ here's my completed card.

Another different image than the normal mermaids, but isn't the couple amazing!

Here's my progressive photos for this one.

I wanted a lot of contrast with bold colors for my card.  For her hair I used Copics E39, YR27, YR24, YR21.  His hair is done in basic black using B41, C8, C6, C2.  The scarf, sheath and belt are colored using R39, R46, R37 and R20.

I started with his hat using Copics E81, E84, and E87.  Next, his shirt and tunic using YG97,YG95, YG93 and YG91.  For his pants I used W5, W4, and W2. Then finished the sword top with C3 and C4 and his boots with E34, E33, E30 and W4.

I love the colors in her long mermaid tail.  I used BG18, BG09, BG49, BG57, completing the couple.
I pondered over the background for a long time, knowing I wanted water but not sure about the total image.  One of my friends suggested moonlight ~ perfect!
You can see I sketched in the water, horizon and a 'moon'.

Next I colored the horizon silhouette of trees using BV25 and BV29.  Then I randomly filled in the water, keeping the path of the moon reflection lighter.  My water colors were B21, B00, B24, B45, B37 and B60.

After tracing the moon to define it, I wished I hadn't. But can't remove that line, so moving on.  For the moon I used V000 and V0000.  I was away from home doing this card, and also used copics for the night sky.  Had I been home or had my supplies, I would have done the background with Distressed Oxides.  For the night background I used V20, B60, B63 and B66.  I blended over using BV0000.

After trimming the edges, I mounted the completed image on a solid orange card stock, then added to the mermaid scale paper. I tilted it slightly when securing to allow a bit more of the background paper to show.

Lastly I wrapped navy twine around the fold three times and added the pirate ship charm.  Loving how this turned out!
